CDS DAY 1: Strategic Management & Leadership

The first step to advancing the role of career development on campus is a more professionally run organization. Providing an inspiring vision; clearly defining your purpose; and, working cooperatively with your team to set ambitious yet achievable goals and objectives are critical to your success. With a clear plan in hand, you need a process which aligns your aligns your team and allows for regular measurement and reporting against your objectives.

This one-day program will focus on the big questions faced by leaders in career development and experiential programs while familiarizing them with a structured approach for strategic planning. Participants will engage with colleagues in discussions about both the long-term vision for career development on campus as well as the immediate core purpose of their offices or departments.

The program will include an overview of goal setting and metrics; engaging key stakeholders; accessing pertinent research; and structuring the planning process. It will wrap up with a process for leading your team through implementation to ensure your success in achieving your goals.

Those with experience in strategic planning will benefit from the external perspective provided by colleagues from other institutions and a refresher on the key steps to a successful process. Those who are new to leading a planning process will come away with a clear understanding of the steps involved in effective strategic planning.

All participants will leave energized to strengthen their leadership by being prepared to provide a clear vision and committed to the steps to effective implementation.

CDS Day 2: Integrating Career Development Across Campus

This one-day program will focus on the concepts, research, initiatives, and progress that are driving forward the integration of career development throughout the post-secondary experience.

Taking a step back from the fiscal challenges faced by many over the past two years, one can see that at a macro level major changes are taking place on campus in terms of student career development. To many, it appears that we are nearing a tipping point.

On some campuses, the conversations among, and with, senior administration are changing. There are numerous reasons for the changes including the drive for greater student engagement; students’ demand for better access to employment opportunities and concerns about the relevancy of their education; and, the increasing focus on Strategic Enrolment Management on campus.

Leaders in campus career development will learn about these trends and from experts in the field and also have an opportunity to share advances being made on their own campuses.

The Creation and Growth of Canada’s First Work Integrated Learning Unit

This presentation will provide an overview of how the Work Integrated Learning unit (WIL) at Simon Fraser University was created from the existing Co-op, Careers, and Volunteer Services – all of which previously reported to different areas of the University. In this session, the unit’s architect, Dr. Nancy Johnston, will candidly describe what SFU did, why they did it, what problems they encountered and how they managed them. This case study will provide great insights and an opportunity for participants to compare the experiences at SFU with changes going on at their own campuses.

Building the Framework for Integrating Career Development in the University Context

Integrating career development and student affairs overall within the academic context has become a focal point at Laurier in the past year. This effort has emerged as an outcome of Laurier’s values, vision, mission and guiding principles; the institution’s academic plan; and Laurier’s student learning and development outcomes. It is being driven by leaders in both academic and student affairs. This session will address the institutional foundation which supports integrated learning and career development, goals, and strategy for implementation.

Attracting More and Engaging Effectively: Understanding What Students Want

What do students want in terms of career development opportunities and support? How have students’ attitudes and expectations changed? How can schools better meet the needs of their students?

Over the past seven years, Graham Donald and his partners have surveyed more than 120,000 students to create the annual From Learning to Work Report. In this presentation, insights from The Report will be shared including details about how students want to receive communications; how their usage of career services has evolved; what they want from co-op opportunities; and what they have come to expect from their post-secondary institutions in terms of career education. Highlights from The Report will be used as the basis for a facilitated discussion among participants about how institutions can better reach and engage students in career development.

Case Studies: Advancements in Expanding the Role of Career Development on Campus

This session will consist of a series of short presentations by participants profiling new programs and initiatives that increasing the usage of career development on campus.
