From Learning to Work Report
The From Learning to Work Report includes comprehensive information about how students make career decisions, where they gather information, who influences their decisions and much more. It also includes insights into what students expect from their career services office and how they rank Canada’s major employers.
For more comprehensive details about the purpose and content of the report please download this outline.
The survey from which the report is produced is promoted to students across Canada (in both English and French) via e-mails. The reach of the survey is greatly enhanced by campus career centres and co-op/internship offices that e-mail the survey link out to their students. Funding for the project comes from subscribing employers.
If more than 200 of your students complete the survey, you will receive a customized report with comparative data showing your students’ responses alongside the national sample. This report will be unique to your school. If fewer students complete the survey (a minimum of 50), you will receive a copy of the standard campus edition of the report. Reports will be distributed at the end of summer of 2012.
The From Learning to Work Report is not available to offices that do not participate in promoting the survey to their students.
If you are not certain of the value for your office and require further information, please contact Graham Donald at graham@brainstorm.ca.
Participation Details:
In order to participate, you will be expected to e-mail a link to the survey to your students during the survey period (early February through the end of March). We will provide you with some sample text to include in your e-mail message; you will, however, be free to edit it to meet your needs. Ideally, your e-mail list will include all students in all years of study or at least a broad spectrum of students who have and have not used your services. Please describe your list in the space provided on the form (i.e. “all students in our science faculty”, “all subscribers to our career centre newsletter”, etc.).
Please Note: A minimum of 200 survey responses from your school is required to create the custom report. If fewer responses are received, a generic report will be provided.
Confidentiality: Individual responses will remain strictly confidential and not be affiliated with student names.
In order to encourage student participation Brainstorm is offering one Apple iPad as a prize, which will be chosen through a draw at the end of the survey.

Testimonials from Current Subscribers:
- “We find the From Learning to Work Report an essential tool which can help us, among other things, compare students’ views on our career services from year to year. It’s been invaluable in helping us to better understand and therefore better serve our students and young alumni.”
- Gregg Blachford, Director, CaPS, McGill University - “We greatly encourage colleges to become involved in this survey, given the wealth of information gathered.”
- Monique Morin, Graduate Consultant, Niagara College - “I find the survey results to be useful in numerous ways. Everything from informing my day-to-day decision making to providing context for our Employer Relations.”
- Kristi Kerford, Director, Academic Skills and Career Centres, Trent University - “The From Learning to Work survey plays a significant role in informing our marketing efforts to ensure we are reaching our intended audience. As a degree-granting polytechnic institute, we serve people in various stages of career launching and transition. Many have done substantial career planning prior to enrolling here and others come for upgrading, post-graduate programs and lifelong learning. The survey results encourage us to target our messages and be strategic in communicating to very busy full-time and part-time students and alumni.”
- Pat Slatten, Student Employment Services, British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT) - “Each year, Laurier participates in the From Learning to Work Survey because it provides us with a profile of our students and their career interests, and helps us understand the value students place on our programs and services. It also equips us with data to assist our employers as they develop their recruiting strategies. And…it’s Canadian data!”
- Jan Basso, Director, Co-operative Education & Career Development, Wilfrid Laurier University - “The From Learning to Work data is extremely useful in planning events, guiding students, and allocating budget dollars. I would highly recommend other post secondary institutions take part in the survey due to its relevance to Canadian students and stakeholders. On my desk, it is one resource that is always within reach.”
- Howie Outerbridge, Director, Career Services, University of British Columbia - “The findings have informed our planning and activities, sometimes in unexpected ways. An example – one of the outcomes showed that a significant number of Queen’s students would stay in Kingston to live and work. We have leveraged this information into a growing relationship with local employers. Without FLTW, we wouldn’t have known to pay attention to this important mandate.”
- Paul D. Smith, Director, Career Services, Queen’s University
