University of Nebraska-Lincoln :) 00:13:32 Rachel Larson: Greetings from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Business! 00:13:32 Peter Thorsett: Hello from Tampa, Florida and the University of South Florida! 00:14:19 Steven Rothberg: Hello from Minneapolis, Minnesota at College Recruiter job search site 00:38:44 jeffrey moss: What are your thoughts given almost half of students don't expect to participate in virtual career fairs, and those that do expect to only "visit" with those companies they're already planning to apply to? 00:38:54 Katie Schwartz: Hi Panelists! Are you giving away some sort of virtual swag to the students you meet at virtual events? If so, what are you giving away and how are you distributing these items? 00:44:39 jeffrey moss: To the question about swag, students have said they don't want it. The most valuable thing recruiters can provide are opps for real professional experiences: https://info.parkerdewey.com/2020-fall-recruiting-report 00:45:20 Micah Lindblad | Nelnet: Thanks for sharing Jeffrey! 00:45:23 Katie Schwartz: Thanks Jeffrey 00:47:32 jeffrey moss: @scott - 100% correct. The challenge will be engaging students who aren't already planning to apply (or even aware of) your company 00:49:14 Steven Rothberg: I’m curious as to what the strategies are for the panelists to engage with students if the virtual career events prove not to deliver the hires the employer needs, both in terms of numbers and diversity. 00:49:57 jeffrey moss: I second @steven's question... I think there will be a lot of surprises at the end of recruiting season. 00:52:10 jeffrey moss: @benjy - great point. But even well known companies have the issue. Don't think about strat roles at Pepsi. Tech roles at JP Morgan. Finance roles at Apple. 00:53:03 Steven Rothberg: We’re already hearing from employers who are seeing loads of attendees at the virtual career events and some of them getting loads of applicants, but they’re not seeing the quality they wanted. The anecdotal information we’re getting from the large employers is that the virtual career events are delivering a very non-diverse audience and applications not nearly at the scale that they need. The events seem to be a great fit for employers who want to hire maybe a couple of dozen but not hundreds or even thousands. If you want to hire 200, you probably need about 4,000 applications (1/20 applicants get hired is a normal ratio for internships). 00:54:26 Marcos Morales: With less in-person access, how has you been able to maintain or even expand your diversity recruiting? 00:54:42 Katie Schwartz: @Scott Johnson. Exactly! Be able to actually respond to emails and LinkedIn messages sooner now that we won't be on the road 3 months straight! 00:58:04 Micah Lindblad | Nelnet: @Marcos this is one technology Nelnet is engaging with this year! https://internx.org/ 00:58:22 Marcos Morales: @Micah, thanks! 00:59:10 jeffrey moss: Take a look at what WInningEdge is doing to engage diverse student-athletes: https://winningedgeleads.org/gigs 01:02:40 Sabrina Slade Slade: Hello there and thanks to Graham and the panelists! If you are interested in great diversity candidates for your roles, please feel free to email me at sslade@seo-usa.org. I work with SEO Career - we recruit Black, Latinx and Native American students for internships in real estate, tech, banking and corporate services - https://www.seo-usa.org/career/ 01:03:48 Marcos Morales: @Nicole, I agree what you shared on training of recruiters in unconscious bias. I would offer another great organization that prepares diverse students www.INROADS.org 01:04:59 Marcos Morales: https://inroads.org/ 01:05:37 Tori Boyle: The one thing to know is we are all in the same boat. 01:07:57 jeffrey moss: Yup @tori. Unfortunately it seems like many are all trying to use the same lifeboat. 01:08:05 jeffrey moss: (And the lifeboat has holes) 01:09:27 Tori Boyle: Agreed! I felt incompetent up until a couple of days ago. Because I'm supposed to be the expert and how can I, If I don't know how myself. 01:10:27 jeffrey moss: To the point about engaging the hiring managers, the trick is to reposition it as a perk for them. https://info.parkerdewey.com/wayne 01:10:31 Nicole Ramirez: Absolutely, @Tori! It's comforting to an extent to know we're all in the same boat. 01:11:55 Mary Scott: To Scott's point, there were lots of reasons virtual events fell short of expectations [employers and students] prior to COVID. Those shortcomings may well be amplified - but it's too early to know. 01:12:21 Steven Rothberg: excellent discussion! 01:12:35 Marcos Morales: Thank you! 01:12:52 Shelly Alfaro: Thank you!
