View ProgramAdvancing Indigenous Initiatives at Humber Polytechnic
On June 21, 2024, Humber Polytechnic made a groundbreaking move by becoming the first college in Canada to offer free tuition for Indigenous students from eight First Nation communities. This historic initiative strengthens the relationship between the institution and Indigenous populations. Working closely with local Indigenous communities, Humber’s Indigenous Education & Engagement team is dedicated to fostering a sense of community by integrating Indigenous perspectives into student experiences. The initiative is focused on supporting Indigenous students academically, culturally, and socially, ensuring they feel valued and supported in their educational journey.
As the demand for this support grows, Humber has expanded its academic services with the addition of an Associate Dean and an Indigenous Curriculum Specialist. These roles are designed to help weave Indigenous knowledge into curricula across various programs, further enhancing the integration of Indigenous perspectives in academic practices. Additionally, Humber encourages its staff, faculty, and students to participate in the “4 Seasons of Reconciliation” cultural awareness training, aimed at deepening their understanding of Indigenous histories, cultures, and contributions. This holistic approach demonstrates Humber Polytechnic’s ongoing commitment to advancing Indigenous education and creating an inclusive and supportive environment for all students.
In this 45-minute presentation by Elijah, Danielle, Quazance, and Grace, we will explore how this initiative is transforming the learning environment at Humber, the impact on Indigenous students, and the importance of these changes for the broader educational community.
