Through real-world case studies and interactive discussion, participants will see how subtraction—not addition—can strengthen alignment with institutional goals, improve outcomes for students and staff, and build confidence even in lean times.
Whether you're in the thick of it or planning your way out, this workshop offers a roadmap for turning institutional strain into strategic opportunity.
Learning Outcomes:
- Identify opportunities to streamline processes, programs, and practices for maximum impact.
- Apply strategies to align limited resources with institutional priorities and student success.
- Learn from real-world examples where simplification and clarity led to stronger outcomes for students, faculty, and staff.

Beyond the Blank Stare: Reaching a Generation Raised Online
Confidence isn’t a diploma you hand out on graduation day. It’s a doorway students learn to find, open, and walk through long before they leave campus.
In this workshop, we confront the reality of the ‘Zoom Face Generation’—students who spent high school behind screens, absorbed by algorithms, and arriving on campus less comfortable making eye contact or raising their voice. With bold style and real-world warmth, this session blends cultural commentary and proven techniques to help reshape interaction from the first day to a future career.
You’ll walk away with actionable strategies to cut through digital fatigue, spark authentic connection, and rebuild social confidence—all without requiring a bigger budget. Think micro-moments that matter, attention hacks that work better, and mentorship moves that feel human again.
Learning Outcomes
- Cultivate deliberate micro-engagement techniques to reconnect students.
- Activate student confidence through structured yet human mentorship moments.
- Translate cultural trends (like algorithm attention models) into tools that hold focus and foster growth.

Digital Belonging: Building Community to Boost Retention
Promoting services and events online isn’t enough — students need to feel a sense of belonging before they’ll engage and persist. But how can we foster belonging in an increasingly digital world? With more students living local and commuting, York University turned to intentional online activations, FOMO (fear of missing out) and trend-driven content to build community beyond the physical campus. This session explores how digital belonging strategies can strengthen connection and retention, and how you can adapt these ideas for your own institution.
Learning Outcomes
- Design intentional digital activations that foster authentic student engagement.
- Leverage FOMO and social momentum to drive participation and connection.
- Apply trend-driven strategies to strengthen belonging and retention.

Start Now, Stay Connected: Building Mentorship into Alternate Admissions Pathways
Carleton University’s Enriched Support Program (ESP) was created to give students who might otherwise face barriers to university a chance to “Start Now.” By providing supported access to first-year studies, full membership in the university community, and the opportunity to earn credits right away, ESP has become both a recruitment and retention strategy for students who would otherwise be left behind.
In recent years, the program has expanded its mentorship model that connects current ESP students with program alumni. The addition of an online community hub, social events, and a volunteer program — built on a shoestring budget — has extended the impact of the program: current students gain guidance, encouragement, and a stronger sense of belonging, while alumni deepen their connection to Carleton and to one another.
This session will walk through the *how and why* of building mentorship into an alternate admissions pathway. We’ll share:
- The rationale behind introducing mentorship into the original ESP model.
- Practical steps to design and launch a mentoring initiative with minimal resources.
- The outcomes we’ve seen for students, alumni, and the institution—and what we're working on and would do differently next time.
Learning Outcomes
- Learn concrete strategies for adding mentorship to existing student success programs, even with limited budgets.
- Identify ways to engage alumni as partners in student retention and success.
- Apply insights from Carleton’s ESP experience to adapt or strengthen alternate admissions pathways at your own institution.

Connected by Design: How Program Resource Clusters Power the Markham Student Success Model
This session explores how York University's Markham Campus created a consistent student experience across multiple faculties with distinct governance structures. The Markham Model of Student Success uses Program Resource Clusters (PRCs)—monthly, cross-functional meetings—to align advising, admissions, learning skills, career education, student life, counseling, accessibility, and wellness. This approach fosters collaboration, reduces duplication, and improves responsiveness to student needs, ultimately enhancing student outcomes and institutional agility without requiring a structural overhaul.
This presentation shares how the Markham team moved from a bumpy start to what they now call a “lumpy but working” model, where each lump represents a point of connection, progress, and partnership. Participants will learn how leadership teams across decentralized faculties can apply similar governance and communication structures to achieve alignment in their own institutions, without the need for structural overhaul.
Learning Outcomes
- Examine how multiple faculties with separate governance structures can coordinate effectively under one shared campus vision for student success.
- Analyze how data sharing, early alerts, and cross-functional problem solving can improve both student outcomes and institutional agility.
- Reflect on the idea that integration is not perfection, but progress, and consider how to sustain momentum even when systems remain lumpy but improving.

Closing: The Ripple Effect: Your Work, Their Future
Every interaction, decision, and initiative in postsecondary education creates ripples that shape students’ lives—and, ultimately, society itself. In this closing plenary, we’ll pause to connect those dots and reflect on the lasting impact of our collective work.
Through guided discussion and collaboration, participants will identify one courageous action they’ll take after the conference to advance student success, institutional strength, or sector-wide change. Together, we’ll capture these commitments on a shared “Ripple Wall” — a visual or digital pledge board that extends the energy and accountability beyond the event.
Leave re-energized, reminded of your influence, and ready to make waves that matter.

Manager, Content Strategy
Shane Riczu has been working in post-secondary as a web content strategist for over 12 years. In his time at the University of Alberta, he’s been through a complete CMS migration, a total brand refresh and many, many special projects. He sees his job as a content strategist as helping both web users and content owners get what they want from a website. He started down this path after smuggling himself into Digital Humanities from his Master’s in English. His fate was sealed after taking a single course in programming languages where he learned HTML/CSS. Along the way, he’s also added side servings of digital marketing work and game design to his resume. A perfect day for Shane would be a run through the forest followed by an afternoon writing in the sun. Comment end

Testimonials
Join our growing community of forward-thinking professionals.
Tom Brophy
Associate Vice President, Student Affairs and Services, Saint Mary's University
"This is a high-quality, high-impact event. My team, who attended the June 2025 SEMM Conference, came back very much professionally invigorated and with a much stronger grasp of the enrolment interconnectivity that is needed to make significant inroads to improve student success. There is a renewed focus on breaking down silos and seeking ways to further collaborate within Saint Mary’s University. Talks have already begun about launching our internal student success conference as a result of the inspiration that my team brought back from attending this conference! "
Shelby Verboven
Registrar, and Assistant Dean of Strategic Enrolment Management, University of Toronto Scarborough
"I love coming to this conference and hearing from colleagues. I always get new ideas, and it is great to see that universities and colleges from across the country are dealing with similar challenges and issues."
Natalie Leung
Former Social Media Manager, Humber College
"I am really excited to be at this event today because I get to meet a lot of people from various colleges and universities across Canada, and outside of Canada as well. It is a great opportunity to share insights, discuss everything happening in the post-secondary sector, and learn from one another."
Jenn Goodwin
Vice President, Enrolment and College Relations, Okanagan College
"This is my first time at the SEMM Forum Conference, and it has been a fantastic experience so far. There are lots of people who have got experience, knowledge, and understanding of SEMM in different ways. The opportunity to be part of the conversion, and to learn from others is absolutely invaluable."
Susan Blake
Instructor, College of New Caledonia
"Attending the SEMM Conference this year again was an absolute game-changer for me! The sessions were incredibly insightful, offering practical strategies and fresh perspectives on everything from recruitment to student success. I especially appreciated the emphasis on data-driven decision-making and the inspiring examples of how other institutions are innovating their enrollment strategies. This conference is a must-attend for any institution/person serious about strategic enrollment management!"
Karen Bravo
Registrar, Northern Lights College
"The SEMM Conference program helps me shape my understanding of the process of managing enrolment and how I can support it through my current role as Registrar. SEMM, in my opinion, is about applying common sense to the work we do, thinking outside the box, and collaborating amongst the team to approach a desired outcome."
Erika Wright
Manager, Corporate Partnerships and Communications, Humber Polytechnic
"I thoroughly enjoyed and found all sessions I attended over the two days to be very timely, relevant, and ultimately valuable in my work."
Holly MacDonald
Assistant Registrar, Student Retention and Academic Services, Cape Breton University
"The conference was such a valuable experience, as attending allowed me to give myself permission to put away other work and focus on the key topics at hand. Although the ability to network, research and analyze enrolment management content is always available to us, conferences with colleagues offer a unique opportunity to sink into the information and networks both organically and with attention. I found it helpful to learn how others were putting the sessions into context for their specific institutions and to get a sense of where we all were, along the SEMM path, in relation to one another. I took many notes, had aha moments, ate well and made new friends! Thanks to the hosts and presenters!"
Blessie Mathew
Assistant Dean, Student Success, Careers, and Experiential Learning (Dean of Students) , University of Alberta
"This was my first SEMM Forum and I was thoroughly impressed by the quality of the sessions and the opportunity to connect with and learn from colleagues across the country. It was a fulfilling experience to hear what challenges we were all facing and to put our heads together to discuss creative solutions. I returned to my institution with a lot to share."
Sharon Aschaiek
Principal, Higher Ed Communications
"The 2022 SEMM Forum was an excellent opportunity to learn about higher education enrolment strategies, tactics, issues and opportunities, and to network with recruitment, advancement and marcomm professionals from institutions across Canada."
Janene Christiansen
Registrar and Associate Vice-President, Strategic Enrolment, George Brown College
"What I like about the SEMM Forum Conference is the networking you get to do. We are all on the same SEMM journey, perhaps at different times, different structures, and it is great to see where everyone is at. To network and learn best practices, as it is a constant learning, education journey."
Dan Seneker
Associate Vice-President Enrolment Management & Registrar, Enrolment Services, Saint Mary's University
"Attending the 2025 Atlantic SEMM Conference was a valuable experience and opportunity for our team. It provided the space for rich, thoughtful conversations and meaningful networking with both internal and external colleagues. At a time when the post-secondary landscape can feel uncertain, this opportunity helped reignite our passion and reminded us of the power of collaboration, fresh perspectives, and shared purpose. It was just the spark we needed."
Gord Hunchak
Vice President, University Relations, First Nations University of Canada
"I have been at the SEMM Forum Conference multiple times, and I find that this is one of the best conferences for enrolment professionals in the University system in Canada, on an annual basis. It has been a superb conference every year. Every year we have had an opportunity to network with fellow professionals. Every year we learn a little bit more. Every university goes through different challenges, different opportunities, and those are shared here. The learning is immense."
Michelle Dittmer
President & Co-Founder, Canadian Gap Year Association
"SEMM Forum is a great way to bring brilliant minds together to tackle challenges that we all experience and bring awareness to how we can better support our students and institutions. I always come away with new ideas and ways to do my job better."
Chanelle Landriault
Manager, Consortium national de formation en santé (CNFS), Laurentian University
"Every presentation I attended was well prepared, delivered professionally and had clear takeaways. It doesn't matter if you have been in the field for less than two years or 15 years. You will leave with knowledge you can start applying now."
Allie Bear
Manager: Marketing and Communications Strategy, Wilfrid Laurier University
"I have worked in higher education communications for seven years but I just recently started a role focused on strategic recruitment communications. SEMM Forum was an incredibly timely and valuable introduction to a side of the student life cycle that is largely unfamiliar to me. I have some building blocks for success as I enter into this next chapter of my career. Thank you!"
Georgine Van de Mosselaer
Former Director of Advancement, Booth University College
"As someone who is new to the field of recruitment, the SEMM forum provides not only "point in time" information, but credible and informed speakers to deliver it. Content, format, collaboration, expert delivery and support all combine to provide a Canadian event with great perspective."
Mark Kolanko
Manager, Student Services, Nova Scotia Community College
"The SEMM Forum offers an insightful and engaging look at leading research and activity taking place across the higher-education landscape in Canada. It is a high-value learning opportunity for SEM professionals!"
Alison Pickrell
Senior Consultant, Academica Group Inc.
"As an Associate Vice Provost, Strategic Enrolment Management, at one of Canada's medical doctoral universities, I appreciate the opportunity to connect with a variety of individuals (senior leaders through to those new to the field) to discuss emerging topics, trends, and best practices. I have not attended in a few years, and it reminded me that our environmental and cultural contexts are continuously changing and it is important to keep engaged."
Lorretta Neebar
University Registrar, Algoma University
"The information presented was relevant to a wide range of post-secondary administrators. This is extremely important as communication between all levels of administration such as recruitment, marketing, student services, admissions and all other facets is needed in recruitment, retention and graduation initiatives."
JP Rains
Director, Digital Strategy & Communications, Laurentian University
"The SEMM Forum is one of Canada's best opportunities to grow a deep understanding of enrolment management and marketing. The program is top-notch and so are the attendees; rarely do I see this type of high quality interaction between presenters and participants."

FAQs
Frequently asked questions
Where will this event take place?
This is an in-person conference and will take place at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel, 116 King Street West, Hamilton, ON, L8P 4V3, Canada. See the When & Where page for more information.
When is the event?
All Pre-Conference Workshops (separate registration required) will take place on April 7, and the main 2-day conference will be held on April 8 & 9, 2026.
Is the SEMM Conference right for me?
Are you involved in attracting, recruiting, or engaging students in their post-secondary experience in Canada? If the answer is yes, then the SEMM Conference is right for you. This includes strategic enrolment leaders, marketers, recruiters, registrars, senior administration, deans, student services and other professionals. Check out the Who Should Attend? section here.
What's the benefit of a program focused on Canadian practices?
We’re Canadian, eh? SEM is very different in other countries. We believe that when professionals learn from peers at other institutions who have similar goals, students, systems and constraints and share Canadian-made solutions across silos, organizational goals can be achieved, and students benefit as a result. The SEMM Conference provides an opportunity for everyone on campus to have a positive and sustainable impact on the institutional outcomes that support student success.
Is this conference entirely in-person, virtual or hybrid?
The conference is entirely in-person. You can be confident knowing that the conference team is taking all public health measures very seriously. We will follow guidelines at all times and request that our delegates follow them.
